A Great Return For Callander Amateur Operatic Society and a Great Show Coming Up

Welcome to the website of Callander Amateur Operatic Society ..... or CAOS as we're affectionately known.

I am pleased to announce that next year's show will be Annie, another great favourite with audiences far and wide. Once again we will be producing this show in collaboration with the Callander Kirk Junior Choir from whence will come Annie herself and all the lovable and mischievous orphans including.   Click here to find out more.  What a great show to follow the success of Oliver! (see below).

As many of you will know, 2017 marked our return to the stage after missing out a year in 2016.  And what a return it was.  We chose to do the blockbuster Broadway show, Guys and Dolls.  The show drew large audiences, who, by the time they left, were buzzing.  Every night's audience went away saying that this was one of our best ever shows.  The company had been smaller than in previous years and this made putting on a show like Guys and Dolls more difficult, but everyone rose to the occasion and put on performances that will live in the memory for a long time.

Then in 2018, we put on Oliver! and if we thought Guys and Dolls was a great success, Oliver! was even better.  Full houses for two of the performances and big audiences for the other two, showed that CAOS was back at its best.  Once again, audiences were telling us this was our best show ever.  Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, but it was certainly a big hit.  The show was a collaboration between CAOS and the Callander Kirk Junior Choir.  There were 24 kids on stage and they were great!

We have to thank a large army of volunteers who help us out every year by running 'front of house', managing back stage operations, lighting, props, prompt, wardrobe, teas and coffees etc.  Our Director, Iain Fraser and our new Musical Director, Linda Cantlay, were tireless in getting us to the point where we could present the show with confidence.

Going back to Annie, rehearsals will start on Monday 3rd September and, after basing our rehearsal space at Callander Golf Club for the last six years, we are returning to our 'spiritual home', McLaren High School.  We'd like to thank the Golf Club for stepping in to the breach when we were without a rehearsal venue.

Rehearsals will start, as usual, at 7.30 pm.  If you'd like to join us on stage to sing, dance or just generally move around being servants, down-and-outs or a variety of other 'passers-by', you'll be most welcome.  Just come along to McLaren High School and Monday evening.

CAOS is keen to encourage existing, new and younger members to join the society for the season 2018/2019.  For those thinking about joining us, but put off by the inclusion of "Operatic" in our name, thinking that we just do old fashioned, fuddy duddy stuff, DON'T BE.  We've never ever done a proper opera and although we've done some operettas, e.g. Gilbert & Sullivan stuff, most of our shows are West End and Broadway musicals.

If you enjoy singing and like the idea of performing in front of an audience, and would like the opportunity of being involved with a long established and successful team of like-minded enthusiasts, then please come along to our rehearsals.  No particular skills are required.  You don’t have to be able to read music although some singing ability would definitely be useful.  No previous experience of either acting or performing is an entry requirement, those skills can be developed through experience.  What we do know is that when you come along you'll be in the company of many others who didn't know what to expect when they decided to "give it a go".  You might have thought about it for years, well now is your chance!  As mentioned above, rehearsals take place on Mondays at McLaren High School, starting at 7.30 pm and running through to 10 pm.
